Stainless steels are distinguished above all by their resistance to corrosion, which increases with increasing chromium content. Additions of molybdenum increase the resistance to corrosion in reducing acids and against pitting attack in chloride solutions. Therefore, there are numerous grades of stainless steel with varying chromium and molybdenum contents to suit the environment, the alloy must withstand. Stainless steel’s resistance to corrosion and stains, low maintenance and the familiar shine make it an ideal material for many applications where both steel strength and corrosion resistance are required.
It is widely used in cookware, cutlery, surgical instruments, large household appliances; construction material in large buildings, industrial equipment, storage tanks and tanks for chemical and food products. The ease with which it can be cleaned and steam sterilized and the absence of surface coatings has influenced its use in commercial kitchens and food processing plants.
